The Play Like a Champion Today Educational Series presented Vince Guider of Old Saint Patrick’s Church in Chicago with the 2018 Rich O’Leary Community Sports Award. This award was established in honor of Rich O’Leary, who served his community as a coach and mentor with kindness and tireless generosity.

The 2018 award was presented during a Saturday evening dinner at the 2018 Play Like a Champion Today Sports Leadership Conference, held June 22-23, 2018 at the University of Notre Dame. Guider was a speaker at the event, taking part in a panel discussion titled Crossing Boundaries: How Youth Sports Can Bring Us Together.

For years, Guider has worked to do just that. As Director of the North Lawndale Kinship Initiative at Old Saint Patrick’s Church in downtown Chicago, he has worked tirelessly with the North Lawndale neighborhood community to develop “a movement of engaged churches, schools, community organizations, government officials, businesses and individual leaders that work together to address the pressing issues of our city and times” (see oldstpats.org/kinship).

Most recently, Guider has been heavily involved in the formation of the North Lawndale Athletic and Recreation Association (NLARA), a collaboration between North Lawndale community leaders, Old Saint Patrick’s Church, Chicago-based UCAN, the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council (NLCCC), and the Play Like a Champion Today Educational Series. Through kinship, the NLARA seeks to work in partnership with a variety of community athletic organizations and teams to create opportunities for area children.

“As a result of Vince’s leadership, Play Like a Champion has embraced the idea of kinship in our approach to youth, in our relationship with North Lawndale, and with our partners through the country,” said Clark Power, Executive Director of the Play Like a Champion Today Educational Series. “Vince has been a coach and mentor to young people throughout Chicago, he is a beloved and faith-filled leader, an inspiration to all of us at Play Like a Champion Today.”
