Mike Brey & Jack Swarbrick Headline 2018 Conference Speakers
Notre Dame Men's Basketball Coach Mike Brey and Director of Athletics Jack Swarbrick will kick-off the 2018 Sports Leadership Conference on June 22-23, 2018.
Both Brey and Swarbrick rank among the most nationally respected and talented men in their positions. In addition to providing valuable insight for administrators and coaches at the youth and high school levels, both will address this year's theme of Champions for Life: Winning Together, which highlights our need to work together so that all children have the opportunity to participate in a positive sport environment, developing character as well as skill.
Having guided his teams to the postseason in 17 of his 18 seasons at Notre Dame, Mike Brey was the 2012 AP Coach of the Year and a 3-time Big East Coach of the Year (2007, 2008, 2011). In 2018, Brey passed 500 career wins and also became the all-time leader in wins at Notre Dame. In addition to a stellar resume, Brey is well known for his integrity. In a 2018 CBS Sports survey of fellow Division 1 head coaches taken amidst a turbulent year in college basketball, Brey was given high praise. According to one colleague, "He really does do everything the right way."
Jack Swarbrick is finishing his 10th year as Vice President and James E. Rohr Director of Athletics at the University of Notre Dame. During his tenure, Swarbrick has led the athletic department to impressive heights, claiming 5 national championships and many conference titles in both the Big East and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). His list of off-the-field accomplishments may be even greater, as his efforts have helped to make Notre Dame's athletic department among the most respected in the nation. Prior to his appointment as AD in 2008, Swarbrick spent 28 years as an associate with the Indianapolis law firm Baker & Daniels.
Brey and Swarbrick are just the beginning of what promises to be a conference full of expert insight and amazing connections for attendees. Other featured speakers include the inspirational Eric McElvenny, a marine veteran turned endurance athlete who is proving that challenges are meant to be overcome. Bishop Donald Hying will speak on the intersection of sports and religion, while Kathleen Hessert will bring decades of expertise in sports communication to presentations on working with today's children (dubbed "Generation Z") and the world of social media.
